Tommy's ear tubes January 24

After his 6th ear infection in 11 months (5 of which were in the previous 6 months) we met with an ENT.  The doctor confirmed what we suspected, Tommy needed tubes.  The next day we headed to the hospital (incidentally, while we were in the hospital, Utah had a freak Ice Rain Storm, there were accidents all over the place and Izzy saved Grandma at our house by discovering the ice covered steps - on her bottom - before Grandma and Ash would leave to a neighbors house.).  Thomas was a trooper.  He was awakened early, not fed and taken somewhere strange, dressed in strange clothes, had his vitals taken and then was given a medication to help him relax before they took him away.  After they took him away they gave him anesthesia and the actual procedure to place the tubes was very quick.  After recovering a bit they brought him back to us.  He was disoriented and upset and thirsty but immediately threw up what he drank.  He slept for a bit and after he awakened again he did much better.  He was kind of mellow the rest of the day but he did so well.  We were quite proud of our brave little one.
 Before the medication
 Pre-throw up
Sleeping off the medicine while getting a snuggle from Dad...not to shabby.

St. George Mini-Vacation

Before heading back home to the bitter smoggy cold we stopped to have a last few minutes of sunshine.  It was heaven.  We enjoyed the park.  The boys tossed around the Frisbee.  All the kids rolled and played in the sand volleyball pit.  It was so sad to climb in the car to head home.
We definitely all agreed that we love "Sunny Days".

Izzy's Birthday evening Cake and Ice Cream

The birthday cake Izzy had on her birthday was made by our friend Valeri Jones.  I neglected to get a picture of Izzy with the Jones but the cake was delicious.  It was a concoction of chocolate and oreos and it was delish!

Hannah joined us for pizza and cake and ice cream.  Izzy loved having her over.
Grandma and Grandpa and Carolyn joined us as well.  It was so fun to have them over and Izzy felt loved.

Happy 9th Birthday to my Beautiful Isabelle Ila

Some of Izzy's current favorites:
Color: Purple
Music: Adele
Friends: Hannah, Shayleigh, Emeri, Lauren
Activities: Creating, bike riding, playing Poptropica on the computer, playing school or salon
Teacher at school: Mrs. Ahlstrom
Foods: oatmeal, fruit, yogurt, treats, hot cheetohs
Wishes she had: a puppy and her ears pierced

Things I love about Isabelle:  She is creative and ingenious.  She is super helpful when she wants to be.  She likes to play with the little kids often and takes good care of them.  She tries very hard to keep her room clean.  She works hard at school and her teacher enjoys having her in class.  She is very smart and can accomplish big things when she puts her mind to it.  She is a delight and a treasure and I'm am so thankful to be her mother.

St. George Temple

We took a very quick weekend trip to St. George in January.  It was so hazy and smoggy here that we were delighted to get into the sunshine.  It still wasn't warm enough for shorts, barefeet and swimming, but that didn't stop us!  We stopped at the temple when we got there and enjoyed the beautiful feeling of that amazing place.

I love this picture!! I have wonderful children!

These pecan trees were a favorite of mine when I was a kid, when we would visit here I would climb up and shake the nuts down.  Pretty sure it's a no-no now, it probably was then too.  :)

Yummy Tomato Basil Soup Recipe

Crock Pot Tomato-Basil Parmesan Soup
You can find this recipe on the web at http://utah.todaysmama.com/2012/03/20/tomato-basil-parmesan-soup-in-the-slow-cooker-or-on-the-stove-top/  It was printed in the BYU magazine by Karen Peterson (utah.todaysmama.com) and also flew all over pinterest. It is divine!!  My minimal additions are highlighted below.

This is the most delicious soup ever!  Whenever I make it I get tons of compliments.  Serve alone or with grilled cheese sandwiches for a appetizing, comforting meal.
Makes about 2 quarts (about 8 servings)
2 (14 oz) cans diced tomatoes, with juice
1 cup finely diced celery
1 cup finely diced carrots
1 cup finely diced onions
1 tsp dried oregano or 1 T fresh oregano
1 T dried basil or 1/4 cup fresh basil
4 cups chicken broth
½ bay leaf
½ cup flour
1 cup Parmesan cheese (I like more cheese, so add to taste)
½ cup butter
2 cups half and half, warmed (or skim milk if you’re trying to cut some calories)
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
1.  Add tomatoes, celery, carrots, chicken broth, onions, oregano, basil, and bay leaf to a large slow cooker.
2.  Cover and cook on LOW for 5-7 hours, until flavors are blended and vegetables are soft. (I discovered that I like this best if it's nice and smooth, so I blend mine in my Blendtec.  I do this before mixing it together with the roux so there is less to blend.  Be careful with the hot soup - it took experimenting before I figured out how to NOT explode the hot contents all over the place  - for me that meant that I mixed just under two cups at a time and I started at the slowest speed and moved up from there until it was nice and smooth.)
3.  About 30 minutes before serving prepare a roux. Melt butter over low heat in a skillet and add flour. Stir constantly with a whisk for 5-7 minutes. Slowly stir in 1 cup hot soup. Add another 3 cups and stir until smooth. Add all back into the slow cooker. Stir and add the Parmesan cheese, warmed half and half, salt and pepper.  Add additional basil and oregano if needed (the slow cooker does a number on spices and they get bland over time, so don’t be afraid to always season to taste at the end).
4.  Cover and cook on LOW for another 30 minutes or so until ready to serve.

Stove-Top Version of Tomato Basil Parmesan Soup
If you want to make this recipe on the stove-top you can!  Here is the adjusted recipe:
3 cups diced tomatoes with juice (you can use canned)
1 cup finely diced celery
1 cup finely diced carrots
1 Tbsp fresh oregano or 1 tsp dried
4 cups chicken broth
1/2 cup flour
1 cup parmesan cheese, freshly grated (I like more cheese, so add to taste)
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup finely diced onions
4 Tbsp fresh basil or 1 Tbsp dried
1/2 bay leaf
1/2 cup butter
2 cups half and half, warmed (if you want you can use whole milk, evaporated milk instead…or even skim if you want to skinny it up)
1 tsp salt
1.  Heat oil in 4 quart soup pot.  Add celery, onions and carrots.  Saute 5 minutes.  Add basil, oregano, bay leaf, tomatoes, and chicken broth.  Bring it to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until carrots are tender (15 minutes).
2.  While soup simmers, prepare a roux.  Melt butter over low heat, add flour and cook, stirring constantly, 5-7 minutes.  Slowly stir in 1 cup hot soup.  Add another 3 cups and stir until smooth.  Add back into soup pot.
3.  Simmer, stirring constantly, until soup begins to thicken.  Add Parmesan cheese and whisk to blend.  Stir warmed half and half, salt and pepper.  Simmer over low heat 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Ryan's hair

This is how Ryan wishes I'd let him do his hair.  Poor kids, he is so picked on.

Ryan

Apparently I don't take enough pictures of this child.  Regardless, he is a delight in our home.  He is fun to be around and helpful when he's not distracted by a book or a game or the tv.  He loves to be silly and his favorite way to play with his siblings is rough housing, which incidentally they love too until someone manages to get hurt.

Caroling with the Allen's

One of my most favorite Christmas activities is caroling with my family.  Every year it's difficult to find a day we can all go.  Unfortunately, this year Scott was in Salt Lake with the youth at the same time.  We managed to survive without him but only just.
We sing the same songs every year (although several years I tried to introduce new ones).  We run through the songs once and head out the door.  This year we just went to family.  I love to sing.  I love music.  I love Christmas music.  I think when we forget to sing and create music we are missing a piece of our soul.  I love my family.
Uncle Don, Aunt Deenie and Dad  (we make them cry every time we sing - it's their inheritance from their mother, Grandma Helen Allen)

Court of Honor

Ryan's first Court of Honor.  He earned his Tenderfoot rank advancement.
He didn't even poke me when he pinned me.  (To be fair, he's never poked me before either.)
I think he was pleased.  So were we.
Several boys were recognized for going on the Klondike.  He had a grand time but didn't love how much work it was to prepare for and clean up after (not to mention he had to help cook and clean while there).  It was a bit eye-opening for our 11 yr old who generally lives in his own little world.
We were very pleased when Ryan was called up again and awarded a special service award for helping Brother Jones shovel the church sidewalks.  He was the only scout who came and he didn't complain at all, he just went and helped.  I was proud of him and thankful that a leader would recognize him for his hard work.  Life isn't always like that, but it's nice when it is.  (Thanks Brother Jones!)

Izzy and Hannah

These funny beautiful girls decided to dress up and be silly.

Later they did makeovers and their signs say which one is cute and which one isn't.  Isn't Isabelle gorgeous! ;)

Tommy and Midnight

Tommy loves Midnight but he's not always very gentle, however, Midnight has been very patient with him.
Tommy really likes Midnight's bed which generally is outside but the weather was so terribly cold for several weeks that for a while he was sleeping inside as well.
Tommy discovered that they don't both fit inside the crate very well.
